Weekly Update: May 21, 2015
Th Falmouth Farmers Market opens this Thursday, May 21, 2015 at our new home. Please join us Thursday at our new waterfront location at Bigelow Marine Park. Look for white tents on the part of the park behind the band shell, a grassy area with shade trees, near the harbor. Our brassy cowbell will ring in the new season at noon.
Farmers have been planting furiously after a brutal winter. Everyone is in catch-up mode. Don’t expect sun-ripened heirloom tomatoes any time soon. What you will find are early-season greens: Kales, chards, mustard greens, spinach, bok choy, lettuces (from flashy green butter oak to merlot) as well as scallions and green garlic. And of course pea shoots, which are perennially delicious.
There’ll be some overwintered roots like carrots and beets. There’ll be herbs of all sorts and micro-greens. And local rhubarb, which is technically a vegetable but let’s call it our first fruit.
In addition to early spring produce, you’ll find eggs, cheese, bread, baked goods, salad dressing, jams and jellies, sweet confections, coffee, local juices and wine, botanical soaps and oils, lovely lilac blooms and other flowers. And starts—lots of vegetable starter plants that are well-adapted to our climate and growing conditions.
We are also pleased to welcomeCompost With Me this year. Also new this year: just a short walk away, down at the dock, Captain Willy Hatch of Machaca Charters plans on selling fish as the season gets under way.
